CANDIDATE GUIDE

Changing jobs in Japan, with a clearer plan.

A practical guide for AI, Data, Analytics and Engineering professionals. Prepare your CV, approach interviews with confidence and make an informed decision about your next role.

Where are you in your search?

Support for each stage of your search.

Start with your priorities: the work, the team, the language and the conditions that would make a move worthwhile. We will discuss suitable opportunities and agree the next step with you.

Understand the role

Discuss the team, technical expectations, working language and hiring process before deciding whether to apply.

Prepare with purpose

Get guidance on presenting your experience and preparing for the interviews relevant to the role.

Stay in control

Tell us what matters, where you have already applied, and which companies you prefer us not to approach. We agree next steps with you.

A process, not a fixed deadline.

The number of interviews, assessments and notice requirements depends on the employer and your situation. Keep time for preparation, feedback and a considered decision.

STEP 1 OF 4

Prepare a CV that explains your contribution.

Help a hiring manager understand your work quickly. Open with relevant experience, then show the problem you addressed, your role, the scale and the outcome.

  • For AI and ML: explain the evaluation approach, deployment constraints and your own contribution.
  • For data and analytics: describe data quality, stakeholders and the decisions your work supported.
  • For engineering and FDE: show system design, customer context, reliability and delivery trade-offs.
  • Group technical skills clearly. Include your actual working languages and level; avoid overstating fluency.

Make technical depth easy to find.

Group your skills by discipline and distinguish hands-on delivery from exposure. Name the tools in context rather than adding a long list of keywords.

  • AI / ML: modelling, evaluation, deployment and monitoring.
  • Data: SQL, Python, orchestration, warehouses and data quality.
  • Analytics: experiments, metrics, visualisation and stakeholder decisions.
  • Engineering / FDE: architecture, customer requirements and reliable delivery.

STEP 2 OF 4

Prepare for the conversation behind the questions.

Choose projects you can explain in depth. Cover the situation, the decisions you made, the outcome and what you learned. Be clear about your contribution and the limits of what you can share.

Before the interview

Review the role and product, prepare a concise introduction and confirm the interview format and working language. Ask your recruiter what has been confirmed about the process.

AI and Machine Learning discussions

Be ready to compare a baseline with your chosen approach, explain evaluation data and failure cases, and discuss deployment, monitoring and human review.

Data and Analytics discussions

Practise explaining SQL decisions, pipeline reliability, data validation and how a metric or experiment changed a business decision.

Engineering and FDE discussions

Explain design trade-offs, debugging, customer constraints and how you moved from an unclear requirement to something useful.

Questions for the team

Ask who owns the work, how success is measured, which languages are used day to day, and how the team handles technical debt and collaboration.

Salary and role expectations

Consider the responsibilities and total package, including bonus, benefits and working arrangements. Discuss your priorities and any unclear terms with your recruiter.

STEP 3 OF 4

Prepare documents only when they are needed.

Your CV is enough to start a conversation. Requirements later in the process vary. Confirm the purpose, recipient and secure sharing method before sending personal documents.

0 / 4 ready

This checklist records readiness only. It does not upload documents or collect personal information.

STEP 4 OF 4

Review the offer, then plan your transition.

Take time to understand the written offer and resolve open questions before committing. Coordinate realistic dates and a responsible handover.

0 / 6 ready

Clear communication, at your pace.

Tell us where you have already applied, what matters most and which companies you would prefer us not to contact. Keep us informed about timing and other interview processes so we can coordinate with you.

Agree before an introduction.

Your interest in a role is a conversation with our team. It is separate from permission to send your profile to an employer. Discuss each introduction with your recruiter.

Know someone considering a move?

Share this guide or our team page with them. They can decide whether to get in touch; there is no need to send us their CV or contact details.

A few things you may be wondering.

Can I explore roles before contacting you?

Yes. Open Roles shows anonymous summaries. Password-protected member access reveals company names, full job details and the existing application flow. Ask Linh or Smail for access.

Do I need business-level Japanese?

Requirements vary. Check the language information for each role and tell us what you can comfortably do in a professional setting. We can discuss fit without assuming every role requires fluency.

Can I talk to you before I am ready to move?

Yes. Share what you are considering and your preferred timing. A first conversation can help clarify your priorities without committing to an application.

Can you guarantee an interview or offer?

No. Decisions depend on the employer and role. We can help you understand the process, prepare and assess the options available.

Should I upload identity or salary documents now?

No. They are not needed to browse or start a conversation. If documents are requested later, first confirm why they are needed and how they will be handled.

How do I apply?

Use member access to review the full role, express interest and follow the saved-jobs submission steps. Or contact the team if you would like to discuss fit first.
